The Victim Rights Law Center’s Massachusetts office is growing!
As the issue of sexual assault continues to be on the forefront of the national dialogue, more survivors are coming forward for legal assistance with their safety, privacy, education, housing, employment, financial stability, and immigration needs. We need four smart, compassionate attorneys and one paralegal to join the Victim Rights Law Center to increase access to free legal services for sexual assault survivors throughout the Commonwealth.

The Victim Rights Law Center (VRLC) is a nonprofit law center that provides free legal representation to victims of sexual assault in Massachusetts and Oregon, and national training and support for lawyers and advocates on the civil legal needs of rape and sexual assault victims. The VRLC’s mission is to provide legal representation to victims of rape and sexual assault to help rebuild their lives; and to promote a national movement committed to seeking justice for every rape and sexual assault victim. All applicants must be familiar and agree with the VRLC’s mission statement and philosophy regarding our commitment to improving the response to sexual violence, empowerment, and inclusiveness. We are hiring for four attorney positions. Two attorneys will be located in western Massachusetts and two attorneys will be located in southeastern Massachusetts. These positions will be filled by attorneys with a strong work ethic, a good sense of humor, and a commitment to increasing access to legal services for sexual assault survivors.

Organization:

The Victim Rights Law Center (VRLC) is a nonprofit law center that provides free legal representation to victims of sexual assault in Massachusetts and Oregon, and national training and support for lawyers and advocates on the civil legal needs of rape and sexual assault victims. Responsibilities:

  • Provide sexual assault survivors with comprehensive legal consultations, representation, and referrals
  • Provide sexual assault victims with emergency legal services in the areas of safety, privacy, education, employment, immigration, and/or financial stability
  • Participate in weekly intake and case assessment meetings (in person and remotely)
  • Conduct strategic outreach to community partners throughout western Massachusetts
  • Participate in the collection of accurate client services data
  • Work collaboratively with a team of lawyers throughout the Commonwealth
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Admitted to practice law in Massachusetts and in good standing
  • Minimum of four (4) years’ experience as a practicing attorney
  • Valid driver’s license and comfort driving throughout the Commonwealth

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with sexual assault survivors
  • Guardianship experience to help increase access to legal services for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities
  • Courtroom experience
  • Demonstrated interest in education law (K-12/campus sexual assault), housing law, and/or employment law
  • Experience working with trauma survivors and marginalized communities (e.g. LGBTQ individuals, communities of color, people with disabilities, youth)
  • Fluency in Portuguese and/or Spanish preferred

Title:                Paralegal
Status:             Full-time
Location:         Boston, MA

Job Description:
The paralegal, under the supervision of Victim Rights Law Center attorneys, will provide support to victims of sexual assault in Massachusetts. This position will often be the first point of contact for clients and, after extensive training, will conduct client intakes. The paralegal will also help staff attorneys prepare various applications, assist with casework, and provide support with other administrative tasks. The person hired will work with our direct services team in Massachusetts to assist in providing free, comprehensive legal assistance for sexual assault survivors. Applicants will have an interest in being a key member of a legal team, be comfortable working with attorneys in different practice areas, and have a desire to serve survivors of sexual violence.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct initial phone screening with potential clients to assess eligibility for VRLC services
  • Schedule client intakes and appointments with staff attorneys
  • Work with clients to gather assault-related information and documentation
  • Assist with preparation of immigration filings; work with clients on evidence gathering for various forms of immigration relief, including U visas, T visas, DACA and VAWA self-petitions, and asylum
  • Conduct legal research
  • Assist with data management
  • Assist in implementing an outreach plan to increase access for services for survivors throughout the Commonwealth
  • Other administrative tasks as directed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Two (2) years relevant experience in the legal profession, immigration law experience strongly preferred
  • Paralegal certification strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to protecting the rights of underserved populations (experience working with sexual assault survivors strongly preferred)
  • Fluency in Spanish or Portuguese and English preferred
  • Ability to handle and resolve recurring problems in a courteous and professional manner
  • Excellent writing, verbal, computer, and data management skills
  • Able to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision
  • The ideal candidate must be detail-oriented, highly flexible, and self-motivated
