The photos seen here are part of Catherine Pedemontis courageous
and powerful exhibit, Faces of Survivors: Voices Reclaimed.
This photographic exhibit educates the community about sexual violence
and empowers survivors on their healing journey.
Begun in April 2001, the exhibit now includes 20 survivors. Each
participant chooses the images s/he would like to include in the
series, as well as any personal writings to accompany the photos.
The progression of each project is as varied as the survivors themselves.
Some have certain themes or issues they would like to explore through
photography. Some want to capture and honor the places, people,
and activities that are intrinsic to their healing. Some want to
communicate strength and hope to other survivors. Some find it empowering
to simply be photographed, reclaiming a face, voice, and an experience
that is often shrouded in shame and silence.
Faces of Survivors: Voices Reclaimed has been shown
at a number of community spaces and events, including: productions
of the Vagina Monologues at Tufts University, Simmons College, and
Harvard University; International Womens Day; Take Back the
Night at Harvard University; Gabriel Atchisons dance
productions Rites of Passage and Fresh Air;
Womens Health Day sponsored by the Cambridge Womens
Center; Ayers Loft Gallery in Lowell; Yellow Brick Road Café
in Dorchester; the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center; and most
recently at Tufts University, during a night of celebration showcasing
the exhibit with accompanied performances by local artists in dance,
spoken word, and song.
